The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) provides leadership to ensure the undergraduate student voice is a powerful force. We support student activities to create a diverse and enjoyable university community. Funded by the Student Activity Fee, we maintain various agencies to support more than 160 clubs and organizations and the student body as a whole.
The Student Activities Board (SAB) is like the “board of directors” for USG’s large events. By leveraging a significantly larger budget than any single club, the SAB is able to bring big names in music and comedy as well as lectures, concerts and creative events.
The Student Programming Agency or SPA, consists of the volunteer event planners that bring the ideas and execute the events. If you have ideas for large scale events, becoming an event planner for the SPA is the best and most direct way to make an impact.
The USG is comprised of 3 branches; the Executive Council, Senate, and Judiciary. The Senate represents the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, HSC, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Within the senate, there are special committees to work on each aspect of governance, such as the budget committee.
The Executive Council consists of the President, Executive Vice President, Treasurer, four Vice Presidents and four Class Representitives. The Executive Council oversees all aspects of the USG including each agency, and takes care of some administrative responsibilities.
The Judiciary is appointed to handle conflicts within the USG or our student organizations should any arise.
You can get involved in many different ways, even if you don’t want to run for office. We are always looking for help in one of our agencies, as well as internally appointed positions. Please visit the ‘Participate’ page for the most recent list of opportunities. Without becoming directly involved in the USG, you can have an even greater influence on campus through any of the clubs and organizations on campus who collectively create student life at Stony Brook.
We always encourage you to visit us in SAC Suite 202 for with any questions or concerns. Don’t let your four short years go by without getting involved.
