The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) at Stony Brook University is seeking candidates to fill the ten seats on the USG Summer Senate. All matriculated students with a minimum GPA of 2.5 that are taking at least one class in either summer session are eligible to serve in the Summer Senate. One seat is open to a student from the Health Sciences Center, one seat is open to a student from the College of Engineering, and the other eight seats are open to students of any other major.

The Summer Senate shall meet at least once during each summer session, and all legislation passed during the summer shall expire prior to the beginning of the fall semester. All interested students should send their resumes to Executive Vice President-Elect Alexander Dimitriyadi. Appointments will be made jointly by the President and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate under the recommendation of the EVP.

Please distribute this message to any students that may be interested. If the EVP does not receive enough applications, he will not be able to establish the Summer Senate.

New SAB/SPA

As you may already know, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) recently passed legislation to completely restructure the Student Activities Board. The new Student Activities Board (SAB) is a small decision-making board made up of elected officials, and the Student Programming Agency (SPA) will now plan events. The Senate believes this will be a major step in a fresh, new direction to better operate and organize events for students on campus. The USG is looking to appoint a well-qualified person to the newly established position of Director of the Student Programming Agency.

Director’s Responsibilities

For this position, we are looking to find a very talented student with experience in management, event planning, and administration. As Director, you will be accountable for a budget potentially exceeding $500,000 while hiring and managing several event planners. The aim of these changes to the SAB is to create student life more organically at Stony Brook and to lay the foundation for events that will create new traditions at our university. As Director, you will also need to implement a marketing strategy to attract more than 5,000 students to several events each semester. We are looking for someone who is passionate and has a keen insight into what Stony Brook’s student life is lacking in order to creatively work towards a solution. As Director, you will manage a team comprised of some of the most talented and enthusiastic students at Stony Brook. You will oversee event committees chaired by your event planners in order to achieve specific goals regarding cost and student turnout. You will also attract and assist regular students in joining these event committees and bring event proposals to the Board. USG will provide support teams for marketing and financial matters, but the responsibility ultimately falls on the Director to seek and utilize this support. The primary responsibility will be to plan and manage student life on campus.

Search Criteria and Qualifications

The scale of these events will require a serious time commitment from everyone involved, as well as substantial cooperation with administration. USG encourages Club E-Board members to apply, or anyone who already has experience planning events on campus with USG funding. We are also seeking anyone who is familiar with the local and national entertainment industries. Candidates must be able to begin event planning for the fall in August. Since the Director will be involved in hiring and supervising event planners, we will also look for management skills and ideas to attract the best candidates for the positions.

Summary

Research, assess, and execute large-scale events for two semesters

Manage a budget potentially exceeding $500,000

Oversee the planning of campus wide events that could accommodate upwards of 5,000 students

Compensation

The director will be offered free on campus housing or a weekly salary for their work over the summer.

There will also be a reasonable non-negotiable stipend during the semester comparable to that of most USG members for an anticipated 15 hours per week. This stipend is provided to assist with college expenses because it will be difficult to hold another job. It should be made clear that this stipend is not intended to compete with other jobs of a similar nature and workload. We are seeking students who are specifically interested in dedicating their time to creating student life at Stony Brook.

Please fill out the attached application and email your resume to applications@sbusg.org

Deadline

We expect to receive the majority of applications by the end of the week. We will look favorably on applications received by May 5th, but we will ultimately choose the best candidate that we can find in any reasonable time frame. Do not hesitate to submit your application after the deadline.

Earlier in the year there was a lot of confusion and frustration about the proposed location of a hotel on campus. While this project wouldn’t affect most of today’s undergraduates, it is a proposal that has been in the pipeline for more than two decades, and students have a right to be concerned about the future of Stony Brook.

The developer has paid for, completed and released a comprehensive report of the impact on the campus. They also released details of the agreement, including the fact that Stony Brook will pay nothing out of pocket (so this will not be hampered by recent budget cuts), the owner will pay a $100,000 land lease to the Stony Brook Foundation every year, including a percentage of the equity. This money will stay on campus, but it isn’t considered a large benefit or a motivating factor for the project.

The report includes renderings of the visual impact from the road. Please take some time to skim through the PDF: http://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/campushotel/index.shtml

USG has not yet voiced an official opinion about the hotel, but we heard opinions for and against earlier in the year. This year’s senate did not feel compelled to pass a resolution.
