Senator Fan’s September Report

This month as a Senator has been eventful and stressful. Even in the first week of school I could see that people were already stressed out with papers and midterms from their classes. But a college student’s life should not revolve around schoolwork and stress. Students should have fun and enjoy themselves as well. The involvement fair took place from 12:00 – 3:00 P.M. on September 16, 2009. All of the clubs and organizations on campus got together and held an event to spread awareness about their club and to recruit new members into their club. Contrary to what people might think, there are many clubs on campus such as the Korean Christian Federation, the Asian Student Alliance, the Chinese Association of Stony Brook, the Geology Club, Animated Perspectives, and the Pre-med Society etc. I joined a few myself. There are also numerous awesome fraternities and sororities on campus. I think that it is absolutely wonderful that the students who share a common interest can get together and do something fun and also meet new people.

I have attended all of the Senate Meetings (except one because I had a Chemistry Test that day at that time) and have completed all of my office hours. In the first unofficial Senate meeting, we went over the Parliamentary procedures and all of the background information for the Senate Meeting. In the first official Senate Meeting, we nominated and voted on several people for positions on the USG. I strongly feel that all of them were qualified and well-suited for their new positions and I wish them the best. For the second Senate Meeting, we nominated and voted on more people for positions. We voted on which committee we all wanted to be on. I am on the Budget Committee. The Budget Committee has not met yet, but we will meet soon and we will discuss the various issues that should be resolved.

This month has certainly been a hectic month. For me, there was a lot of schoolwork to do and a lot of obligations to meet. I could see that other people were very busy as well. As a student and as a Senator, I think school is important, and a definitely a number one priority. But I think it is also important to get involved with extracurricular activities as well. This way the students will be less stressed out from their classes and gain interpersonal skills from interacting with different people. As I see the smiling faces at this school, I realize how great and wonderful Stony Brook really is. I am proud to be a USG Senator and I look forward to a spectacular and wonderful year!
