Meeting called to order at 7:19 PM, Executive VP Geeta Malieckal presiding

2.0 Announcements

Executive VP mentioned that next week is spring break so no meeting.

3.0 Minutes from 3/26/09

2 errors noted: 1) A formatting error caused the agenda items numbered incorrectly 2) In Open Agenda “hear” à “here”.   Corrections will be made.  In addition, a column for late senators will be added to the role call.  Sen. Hauptman made a motion to approve the minutes with 2 amendments.   A vote was taken by voice.  Motion #1 carried.

4.0 Checks and Balances Amendment

Sen. Kent presented the Amendments to the Checks and Balances Act.

Sen. Kriscenski made a motion to amend Section 2 from “2/3” à “a simple majority”.  Seconded.  After a brief discussion, a vote was taken.  Motion #2 carried 16-0-2

Sen. Anderson made a motion to amend wording in Section 3 to read “of” instead of “by” and approve the Amendment.  Seconded.  A lengthy debate was held.  Sen. Potenza called the question.  Question was called with more 2/3 consent.  Debate was closed and a vote was taken.  Motion #3 carried 16-2-0

5.0 Pay Roll Act 5

Deferred at this time.

6.0 Emergency Grants

Treasurer presented emergency grant requests by the following organizations:

-SSC $2025

-Junior Class Rep $700

-Essence of Praise $850 for dance event

Sen. Anderson made a motion to approve the emergency grants.  Seconded.  After no debate a vote was taken.  Motion #4 carried 15-1-2

7.0 SSC Allocations

Allocations will be deferred until open agenda.

Mujahid Khalfan presented as candidate for SSC treasurer.  Questions were taken from the senate.  Sen. Moore strongly endorsed the candidate.  Sen. Schultz made a motion to approve the candidate. After no debate a vote was taken.  Motion #5 carried 15-1-2. Mr. Khalfan approved as SSC treasurer.

8.0 Agency Chair Reports

SSC Chair Mashouf presented a written report to the senate.  Some discussion was held.

9.0 Executive Council Reports

Vice President Hilton made a report on progress of meeting with clubs.  He has met with 20-25 of approximately 150 clubs on campus.  Questions were taken from the Senate.

10.0 Open Agenda

Sen. Regis stated that Stony Brook Albany Day has been cancelled due to new legislation.   Some of the legislation is positive, some of it isn’t.  TAP will be restored and more of the tuition increase will come back to Stony Brook.  The state will be taking some money student fees.

Sen. Reji made an April 16 spoke about even on April 16 at 7:30 in the SAC ballroom called Love out Loud.  It is to bring attention to sex trafficking.

SSC Allocations were presented

Undergraduate Biochemistry Society- $375

CIC Oscar Symposium – $150

Alternate Spring Break — $1500

Sen. Kent made a motion to approve the allocations.  Seconded.  After no debate a vote was taken.  Motioned #6 carried 15-2-1

Sen. Brady left at 8:02

Sen. Kriscenski made a motion to approve Undergraduate Biochemistry Society to line item status. Seconded.  After a brief discussion a  vote was taken.  Motion #7 carried 15-0-2.

Sen. Forbes stated that he believed too many side conversations was taking place during the senate meeting.

Andy from NYPIRG made a report.  He said that student activity fees are safe.  He discussed the proposed allotment of the tuition increase.

Sen. Brady returned at 8:06.

Sen. Regis wished everyone a happy spring break.

Executive VP Malieckal adjourned the meeting at 8:09
